SPORTING: Prius vs. Expedition

My neighbor replaced their Ford Expedition with a Toyota Prius. At first blush this may seem like a great idea, but according to the Society of Automotive Engineers, between 60% and 80% of the pollution an automobile will generate in its lifetime of approximately 10-12 years is generated in the manufacture of the car itself. In addition, the Expedition will continue to be driven by someone, thus generating more pollution.

The Prius may burn less fuel, but the pollution to manufacture it is not insignificant, and then it needs to be shipped across the ocean and all the fuel burned to get it here.

Just a thought...

I prefer vintage cars and riding my bike when I can. I guess that makes me an eccentric tree hugger.

Long live the gas-guzzling, 7-passenger SUV! Mine is named Black Beauty and she proudly wears an American Flag front and center. She was purchased solely for the comfort of my Labrador retriever and for my antiquing afternoons. She could eat a Prius in one bite. And if given the chance, she definitely would! R. I say buy an old Geo Metro. Same fuel mileage with none of those nasty batteries and new car production pollution.

I liked the old Metro's...3 cyl. if I remember correctly. My brother had an 80's VW Diesel Rabbit that clocked 35 mpg on a regular basis. Imagine that on Veggie oil, and it's like you're saving the planet with every mile.
